Yes, it is possible to get bipolar medications for your loved one FREE. It is a no gimmick, no club fees, no trickery system that is completely legal and can help those who need help the most: bipolar patients with no insurance or low income families. Here's how.
First off, props again to Sammie in the FB forums for telling us about it. She asks for no credit, but she deserves it!
Ok, here's how it works. The program is called Prescription Drug Patient Assistance. There are certain pharmaceutical companies that are willing to help support patients with no insurance by offering medications for free. You have to apply DIRECTLY TO THE COMPANY. They will need to know how much of the specific meds are taken per month. Most of these companies will need a doctor's signature and proof of financial status.
From what Sammie and others say, the meds aren't a lifetime supply. You might get a year's worth. But that's an excellent start, seeing as how the economy is down and most of those meds are dang expensive.
So where can you start? Here's my list:
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Network has a list of companies and contact info at this link
Some states have their own assistance program. Here's a list.
The Partnership for Prescription Assistance is another network. Looks to be very beneficial for seniors. Their poverty level is 11 grand for singles, 22 grand for married couples.
Needy Meds is a non-profit assistance program!
Readers, check out these resources and others. Let me know how it works. I've done a little research, but be careful with any companies that charge any nonrefundable processing fees.
Just for clarification, I don't necessarily believe that medications are the end-all, be-all treatment method for bipolar disorder. Visit some of the blogs on the left to see of people who are no longer on meds. But the reality is that most bipolar patients need them, at least in the beginning phases of getting a grasp on what's going on. If this is the case and you have a hard time affording those prescribed medications, this is a resource on how to get them.
